Top Mom Bloggers Share Their Tips for Back to School Lunches and Snacks

Healthy Living

As part of our #MyNewGoal challenge, a few of our favorite bloggers have joined forces to provide healthy eating tips and snack suggestions for the back to school season.

Megan Block, contributor to Boston Mom’s Blog, uses this time of year to reevaluate her family’s schedule and to create a new rhythm, particularly when it comes to preparing meals and snacks. Her suggestion for feeding kids is giving them the power to choose what they want to eat!

“As a general rule of thumb, I offer my children two foods I know they will eat and one food that might be something new or something they have previously disliked. These three foods — typically a protein, starch, and a vegetable, are presented on the same plate…Giving the power of CHOICE to our children encourages them to explore new foods, and because they don’t feel pressured to finish the whole plate of new food, they are more likely to try it! #MyNewGoal for the school year is to employ the “two of three” rule at more mealtimes and in lunch boxes, too!”

Jocelyn Brown, creator of the blog Hip Mama’s Place, has many useful #MyNewGoal ideas to start the school year off right. We love them all, but our favorite is how she sneaks good-for-you green veggies in tomato sauce. Please your picky eaters by making a batch of this simple marinara pasta!

“Secret sauce.  An easy way to sneak in veggies is to grate or puree things like zucchini, carrots, and squash and add them to any marinara sauce. Make a simple lasagna and use this sauce as your base.”

And Courtney Whittington, contributing blogger from DC Moms, has three great simple snack hacks that are nutritious, inexpensive and fun:

  • Apple Slices Mixed with Peanut Butter and Honey
  • Bananas with Yogurt, Hemp Seeds, and Honey
  • Oatmeal Protein Bites

We highly recommend the banana snack – it is good for all ages. Check out the recipes here and enjoy!
