Hunger Doesn’t Stop After the Bell

Community & Partnerships

Federally funded supper and summer meal programs can be a game-changer for reducing childhood hunger in low-income communities. However, according to studies by the Food Research Action Council (FRAC), out of the 20 million children who participated in the free and reduced-price school lunch program during the 2016-2017 school year, only:

  • 1 in every 20 children eligible received a healthy afterschool supper available through the Child Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Source
  • 1 in every 7 children eligible received a nutritious summer lunch available through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Source

This means a significant number of eligible children are not reaping the full benefits of federally-funded programs intended to combat childhood hunger.

That’s why robust afterschool and summer meal programs are so essential to the health and success of children across the country. Whether it’s a library, community center or school, having an afterschool or summer meal site serving fresh and delicious meals helps build stronger and more resilient communities.

The Child Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) are separate, federally-funded programs intended to provide eligible children access to free afterschool and summer meals and snacks. Passed as part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, these programs present communities with the unique opportunity to:

  • Promote health outcomes for at-risk children
  • Support job growth by increasing the flow of federal funding to cities/states
  • Cultivate relationships across the private, public and non-profit sectors

Our collective work can’t stop until every child has access to three healthy meals each day. Let’s start a healthy food revolution today!
