Feeding Students during COVID-19 Closures: An Example from Achievement First
Community & Partnerships
As we head into the third year of the pandemic, classrooms are yet again faced with closures due to COVID-19 outbreaks and operational challenges. With many students relying on school meals as their source of daily nourishment, school closures can have profound consequences for students and their communities.
Achievement First, a charter school network committed to providing educational opportunities to all students, was faced with the need to pivot to remote learning, potentially halting meal service for their students. As partners, we collectively understand the impact that losing access to healthy meals would have on their students, so our organizations worked together to identify a solution. We are proud to work with passionate partners including Achievement First to support their efforts in fighting for equity and food access in their schools and communities.
“When the pandemic first moved our school to a remote setting, we were concerned about free food access for our families who rely on meals at school for their children. Rev Foods allowed us to serve our school community and provide essential services during a time when a lot of things were uncertain.” -Christine Williams, Director of Operations, University Prep
Challenge: Soon after returning to in-person learning at the beginning of SY21-22, Achievement First was faced with additional unanticipated closures and remote learning across seven locations in New York City. Due to limitations in staff and operational challenges, they were unable to provide meals for their students at their facilities but were committed to continuing their meal program.
What We Did: Revolution Foods aided Achievement First in supporting their goal to continue to feed their students despite the loss of access to their facilities. Together we determined the best distribution method was outdoor pick-up sites at each of the seven schools. This allowed students and their families to conveniently pick up meals daily while limiting the potential spread of COVID-19. Our meal boxes included daily breakfast, lunch, milk, and fruit for students, families, and the community. Revolution Foods drivers and servers worked together to provide relief and food access to families, ensuring that there was no need for any student to miss a meal.
The Results: Together with Achievement First, we were able to provide 210,000 healthy meals for 2,600 students that wouldn’t have had access otherwise.
